Pineross
is the musical embodiment of songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist Kevin Larkin. Kevin began playing flatpick style
guitar when he moved from Michigan to Boulder, CO in 2000. Soon after
discovering a local Irish session on Sunday nights, he bought a
mandolin and started learning a stockpile of fiddle tunes, mastering
the mandolin in the following years at the pub. Pineross'
debut
album was released in 2006, featuring many of Boulder's finest
musicians. It is a meditation on the dying American West, a fusion of
Spaghetti westerns, bluegrass, Irish melodies, and classic country. Larkin
re-casts an American past; he does so fluently, with eyes as
encompassing as Walt Whitman’s

Always restless and in need of seeing his native United States, Kevin
moved to Oxford, Mississippi in February of 2006 to join the Mayhem
String Band on mandolin,
accordion and harmonica. In the past 4
years this "outlaw" bluegrass band has toured constantly, released 2
albums, and shared the stage with acts like The Avett Brothers, Del
McCoury Band and B.B. King. In early 2010, tracking began for the
second
Pineross
album, Detached,
with Kevin splitting time
between Colorado and Mississippi. The album has a much more
experimental feel, exploring and combining numerous different
influences into the acoustic foundation; soul sampling, latin
percussion, drum programming, vintage synths, and flowing lyrics. Along
with playing most of the instruments on the record, Larkin recruited
some of the best samba and string player in the country. The album was
independently released in November of 2011 with 300 CDs made featuring
Kevin's block print artwork.
Kevin recently re-located to Denver, Colorado to form Chimney Choir
with David
Rynhart (guitar, piano, flute, vocal) and Kris Drickey (vocal, banjo,
guitar, percussion). The trio has released two EPs in 2011 with plans
for another in early 2012. Kevin also
performs
as a stripped down version of Pineross, a one-man band atop an old
Samsonite suitcase strumming guitar, mandolin, harmonica and kazoo.
